Bio:

Sarah Siskind continues to be one of today’s most respected and covered songwriters as well as a stand-out independent artist, who Spin Magazine calls “an artist you must hear now”.  Armed with a striking vocal style and solid guitar and piano work, Sarah is a regular NPR performer with features on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts, World Cafe with David Dye, All Songs Considered, Song Of The Day and most recently NPR’s Mountain Stage.  She has toured with Bonnie Raitt, Paul Brady, Grammy winner Bon Iver (who also famously covered her “Lovin’s For Fools”) and The Swell Season and had songs recorded by Alison Krauss (the GRAMMY nominated “Simple Love”), Randy Travis, Madi Diaz and many more.

Born and raised in North Carolina, Sarah built her musical career in Nashville, TN.  Her 2009 release “Say it Louder” was crowned ‘Americana Album of the Year’ at the Nashville Music Awards.  In 2011, Sarah’s album “Novel” highlighted her as the sole musician, producer and engineer.  Bonnie Raitt had this to say about it: “With Novel, Sarah has created another extraordinary collection of some of the most beautiful and unique songs you’re likely to hear. She continues to be one of my favorite singers and songwriters. She absolutely knocks me out.”

Sarah relocated to the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia in 2012 with her husband where she was inspired to write all the songs on the boutique EP “In the Mountains.”  2012 brought big things, including support dates for Bonnie Raitt and Time Magazine calling her “one of our favorite 5 voices” at SXSW in Austin, TX.

In July 2013, Justin Vernon’s Chigliak Records re-released Sarah’s debut full-length album “Covered” which she recorded at age 22 but could not properly release due to illness.  The album is now available worldwide and highlights the guitar work of Bill Frisell.

Siskind’s songs are heavily featured on ABC’s hit TV show Nashville and she recently made her primetime television debut in the music special “Nashville: On the Record”, performing her song “A Life That’s Good” with the show’s cast.  Other television shows that have featured Sarah’s songs are MTV’s Teen Mom 2, MTV’s Awkward, ABC’s Pretty Little Liars, Lifetime’s Army Wives and HBO’s The Wire.

The Heart of Folk concert series proudly welcomes Lindsay Lou & the Flatbellys to Talia Bassment Club on January 23.

With roots in the Great Lakes State of Michigan, Lindsay Lou & the Flatbellys have been non-stop traversing the country with instruments in tow since the release of their 2012 record, Release Your Shrouds. The album showcased the band’s meshing of Appalachian tradition with a rootsy Michigan vigor. But wherever placed in the genre continuum of the times, it’s their sincerity and passion for following the music that propels them. The year ahead will see them releasing their second full length LP and making their first international tours to Germany and the UK. Motivated by the power of music to connect; to ask questions; to heal and to learn about what it means to be human, Lindsay Lou, Joshua Rilko, Mark Lavengood and PJ George are a finger pickin’, harmony slingin’, tight knit family fashion conglomeration who show no signs of slowing down.    www.lindsayloumusic.com

The Neighbors’ is a bluegrass band located in the foothills of western North Carolina. We play traditional and modern bluegrass with a twist of folk, country, blues, and rock and roll. They use traditional bluegrass instruments to play many styles and types of music. Bob Henson is our lead singer and guitar player. Gary Saunders sings harmony and plays banjo. Todd McCloud plays bass and sings harmony. Rick Everhardt plays mandolin.

The group has made several local television appearances and has been on syndicated and internet radio. “The Neighbors” were invited and performed at the Bronzewound Showcase at the 2008 IBMAs in Nashville, TN.

“The Neighbors” have completed an enjoyable five years at Merlefest; 2009 through 2013. Our sets have included the Walker Center, Plaza, Creekside, and Welcome stages. We also had a great time entertaining the kids at Boomer and Moravian Falls Elementary School for the Merlefest schools Outreach program. Some of the tunes and pictures from our five years at Merlefest can be viewed by checking out You Tube and also on Facebook.

For the last four years the band has provided the music for the outdoor drama at the Crossnore School in Crossnore, NC. The show is called ‘Miracle on the Mountain’ and chronicles the life of Mary Martin Sloop who founded the Crossnore School. A CD of soundtrack tunes was recently completed and is now available through the school.
